Another civic-education wake up call
Friday, January 20th, 2012
Earlier this week, the National Conference on Citizenship (NCoC) joined with three Florida civic organizations to release a new report: the 2011 Florida Civic Health Index. Focusing specifically on Millennials (ages 18-29), some key findings from the study include:
- Civic engagement levels of Millennials in Florida are between 7 and 20 percentage points below that of Millennials in the most engaged states in the nation.
- Compared to Floridians over the age of 30 (who are themselves generally less engaged than their counterparts across the nation), Millennials are less engaged by a measure of 2 to 23 percentage points.
- Less than half of Millennials in Florida were registered to vote in 2010, and of those who were registered, just over one in five actually voted.
The report serves as yet another wake up call to the increased need for civic education in schools and the importance of civic engagement outside of them. Read the whole thing here.
