Earlier this year, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce announced the launch of its “Hiring our Heroes” program, a year-long nationwide effort to help veterans and their spouses find meaningful employment. As Chamber Vice President Kevin Schmiegel notes, over 1 million veterans are currently unemployed, including 15.2% of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.
Together with the Department of Labor’s Veterans Employment and Training Service (DOLVETS), the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), and the Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP), the Chamber is sponsoring 100 job fairs across the country. The fairs, which began this past March, provide a good example of a private-public effort, with local chambers conducting employer outreach to private sector businesses in local communities. The fairs so far seem to be pretty successful, with Chicago’s hosting over 127 employers and 1200 veterans and veteran-spouses–and resulting in over 200 new jobs.
